Coptodon Colony

🐟🔍 Coptodon Colony Available for Adoption! 🔍🐟

We currently have a breeding colony of Coptodon cichlids here at J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue! While we’re still working on a more definitive ID of the exact species, these fish are healthy, active, and ready for an aquarist with experience keeping and breeding African cichlids. 🌊

🔍 Coptodon (Tilapia) Quick Care Info (generalized for the genus):
📏 Adult Size: 4–8 inches depending on species
📅 Lifespan: 8–10 years
💥 Temperament: Semi-aggressive—especially during breeding
🏠 Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons for a colony or breeding group
🌡️ Water Temp: 75–82°F
⚖️ pH: 7.0–8.5
💧 Water Hardness: Moderate to hard water preferred

🍽️ Diet: Omnivore
– High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes
– Supplement with vegetables (zucchini, spinach, peas)
– Occasional protein like brine shrimp or bloodworms

💡 Care Tips:
– Provide rocks, caves, and visual barriers for territories
– Sand or fine gravel substrate encourages natural digging and spawning behavior
– Breeding pairs are protective and will guard their fry

This Coptodon colony would make a great project for hobbyists interested in African cichlid behavior or responsible breeding. They’re active, striking fish with fascinating social dynamics.
